Literacy Snapshot

As we begin to think about how we think about literacy as teachers, I want us to explore the role literacy plays in our everyday lives. One way to do this is to create a literacy snapshot. Over the course of the next week, I would like you to document your use of literacy, whether it be writing emails to friends, posting to your facebook, reading a textbook for class or attending an art show. While you are documenting these events, I would also like you to collect artifacts that supplement your documentation about your literacy activities. Artifacts could include magazine clippings, photos, or screen shots. Once you have engaged in several days (think about five or so days) of documentation and artifacts, create a visual representation of your learning about your own literacy practices. You will bring this visual representation to class and we engage in a gallery walk to observe our similarities and differences as literate beings.

This is my visual representation of my own literacy practice last spring. Note the variety of artifacts I chose to include, including the admission that I regularly read perezhilton.com. I'm okay with it.

To make your documentation process easier, I have created a template for you to use. It is a Google doc, which you can use here. It is my hope that this activity will help you think about beginning your Beliefs and Understandings paper.

Literacy Snapshots are due in class Monday, September 15. Please email me with questions or concerns - or, even better yet, leave a comment!

Hey,
I had fun doing the Literacy Snapshot! Is okay if I just wrote out what I did instead of using the google doc or excel? Or did you want a typed copy? Thanks have a good day!

The literacy snapshot is a creative assignment. I was surprised to see how much I read for my own enjoyment on a daily basis. Before completing the snapshot, I did not realize the amount that I was reading on the internet.

I definitely enjoyed this project too. It was interesting to see what I read every day because I never really noticed it. I also never realized how much I read every day on the internet, especially on facebook. Also, is it okay if I did the log on excel?

I really enjoyed this project also. I cant believe how much I actually read during the day. It defiantly shows the importance of being literate..you need to know how to read to accomplish simple daily tasks!!

Do we have to have captions for all of our pictures? I was just going to go captions for some pictures not all of them. Is that ok? Thanks have a good day!

I agree with everyone else who has posted about the project. It has been very interesting seeing how much of my time I waste checking and I guess you could say "creeping" on facebook. I also found that I spend a lot of time talking on AIM, text messaging, and reading e-mails. I have also spent way to much time reading for my classes!!

Hello! I just wanted to let everyone know how much I enjoyed seeing the work you did on your literacy snapshot assignment. I was really sick last week and was not able to attend classes, but your projects helped me understand what I missed in a fun and interesting way. I could really tell that you all put a lot of work into them and you all did a great job!
