Sight Words and Name Brand Phonics

We recently talked about fluency and the role of sight words in developing fluency for elementary students. Research ascertains that kiddos who know a lot of words automatically read in ways that are smoother, understand more of what they read, and succeed more (although it is never really stated what that last one means) than kiddos who are not fluent readers. Here are some resources I've used from the web that will help you think about ways to use sight words in your classroom:

Sight Word From Ms. Ross's Class :: Lots of information about sight words here, including flashcards, word lists and connections to additional web resources.

Mrs. Perkins' Dolch Resources :: Sight words are also sometimes called Dolch words. This site contains a similar array of resources, definitely worth looking through.

Zwolle Elementary Sight Word Fun
:: Some of the links are dead, but it's a good collection of sight word resources as well.

Here's another site that features Name Brand Phonics lessons: 4 Block Literacy. There is a ton on this page, so take a few moments to look through and download freely!

Thank you for posting this information. It is nice to have concrete examples of how to introduce and use sight words in the classroom in order to increase student fluency. These are some really great ideas that will definitely incorporate into my future classroom.

I think this is a creative and cute way to incorporate phonics into the classroom. It is an interesting use of outside resources that can be brought into the class as a way to engage students further into the activity. This activity could also be modified to fit with different hoildays and various events going on in the school. I was wondering if there are word wall suggestions for upper elementary or when it doesnt fit the age anymore?!?!?
Have a good weekend,
Ashley

Wow! All of these sites seem so helpful and have infinite resources! As I was looking through them all I almost became overwhelmed with all of the resources and possibilities for words walls etc. Thank you for posting these sites! They will be a great resource in the future! I really like how the sites have worksheets and lessons that you can print off. This is helpful so you dont have to spend the time making your own! Also I saw Ashleys question and am curious too when word walls no longer become age appropriate.

Thank you for giving us all this information! This is all very helpful and will be extremely beneficial in the future. I like how the websites have worksheets for the lessons so that we can use them in our classroom if we wanted to. It is a great way to teach phonics in an unique way.

What fun ideas on some of these websites! You always post such neat examples of how things are taught in classroom. This is incredibly helpful. It seems like the lower two websites are for teachers. As I was checking out the first website I noticed it had flashcards that kids can flip through, although it is just a word on the website that pops up. It this for the childrens use and if so, do they just say the words or are they suppose to be doing something else with them? I was a little confused! Thanks again!

Thank you for all of these great ideas. Reading and writing have never really been a strength for me, so I am very nervous about having to teach it. I am glad you have given us these examples...I feel more comfortable now that I have some ways to teach the concepts. I defiantly plan to use these sites when I am teaching in the classroom!

Thank you for posting these websites. They are great resources and will be very helpful in the future when I have my own classroom. They show some great outside resources that can be brought into the classroom and engage the students. Many can be modified to fit with the different things that are happening at the school and around the year.

I agree with everyone that these websites are really helpful resources. I am really grateful that you provide us with places to go for teaching ideas because it makes going into the classroom alone, a little less scary. Keep stuff like this coming PLEASE! :) Have a good weekend!

Sight words have seemed like one of those ambiguous topics to me, how do we decide what to classify as a sight word and what to leave out. Some sight words may vary for students based on their experiences too! Thanks for posing this info, it helps to narrow what to pick and how to use them.
